When the pilot lights but the burner won't

Click, click, nothing. Or the flame holds a minute, then drops. That is usually a tired thermopile. It generates its own small current. Soot and corrosion cut the output. The gas valve stops seeing enough to stay open. The other classic here is spiders. Webs plug the pilot orifice. The odorant in the gas attracts them. A fireplace sitting idle most of a Florida year gives them plenty of time.

Setup matters more than brand. Vented log sets retrofitted into pre-1960 Lakeland and Bartow masonry need the damper fixed open. Plenty of those dampers are rusted open or seized shut. Logs placed on an old wood-burning grate sit too high. Flame hits the log, soot forms, and spillage follows.

Prefab fireboxes in 1980s-2000s subdivisions fail from the top down. Water pools on the sheet-metal chase cover and rusts through. Rain runs the vent and lands on the burner. Replace the cover and cap first, or the same repair comes back.

Ventless sets have an oxygen depletion pilot. It drops out in a closed-up room. People blame ignition. The real issue is combustion air.
